Most of my friends are all over the chart with beliefs, most of hers are more conservative Democrats. When asked how I could be married to one of those, I have to remind that not all Democrats are loony lefties like at Berkley or Seattle.
In spite of belonging to different political parties we do seem to get along in the big picture and agree on important issues. Considering you will never completely agree with your spouse the political differences are actually a good excuse to do something like communicate.
Who:
She is a big Obama supporter. She hopes he wins the nomination and will “ditch the bitch” and ask Richards or Edwards to run with. She despises Hillary with purple passion, and even is considering moving to New Zealand to study birds if the (C-word) gets near the White House. (Yes she can talk like a truck driver when children are not around)
Welfare:
She admits the system is broken and not designed to get people independent from state aid. However she really really really gets upset over the welfare worthless. Those that never done anything, do nothing now, and never plan on doing anything. Handicapped are the exception, but she often sees them out there trying. Those who just toss their kids outside and sit on their welfare asses and do nothing but bitch about life being unfair, she wishes they would lose the benefits. Understanding the system broken and you make more with welfare than unskilled labor job can't win, so those that do right by their children and do their best she is fine with. One time while checking out at Winco (discount food store) some large woman was buying steak and lobster with the state food card. My beloved out loud said, and I quote” We should quite our jobs, get welfare so we can afford steak and lobster too.” Giving the women a look of’ Say something, say it, I dare you.” She thinks food stamps should be like WIC a list of useful foods that give bang for buck, like cheese beans peanut butter bread, produce ect.
Though it is not what she does, she will not judge a woman with four kids from four different men. As long as the right thing is being done to raise those kids in a stable household, live and let live. There are ways to go after a deadbeat dad, and if you are clueless as to who the dad is then think next time. Society allows both men and women to behave badly and play stupid games with each other, both parties are to blame, and the children suffer.
Public Education:
She strongly supports the program that any child under 18 can get a free breakfast or lunch at a Boise school year-round. Other than that she sees public school as a silly place. She supports vouchers, charter schools, and home schooling. With public school any time a child falls outside the norm, the school is helpless. Since nobody will fall with in the norm all the time, she rests her case. Ultimately blames bad parenting for bad education. She does support the free condoms from school thing however. She supports college loans Pell grants and such. Thinks those that serve should get more and better college benefits.
Gay Marriage:
She personally thinks man/man woman/woman stuff is gross, and was upset when a lez hit on her, (I think it was because the lez was ugly ha ha) she did vote against the gay marriage ban. She is traditional and thinks marriage is so spouses can protect each other and children, and for the religious a statement of a new faith filled household. Over all she figures that if a non-traditional family can help a child, it is the lesser of the evils.
Reproductive rights/abortion:
She strongly asserts a woman’s right to choose, and disagrees with me that the third trimester is a turning point. She frowns on sluts that use abortion as continuous birth control, but is not shy about saying that the government does not need to be between her legs. Supports state funded abortions because it is cheaper than raising a problem child on welfare and in prison. I agree with the message but not the method.
Border patrol:
We disagree. She wants to seal the border. She says $8.00 an hour jobs are better than nothing, and should be for our people. Why pay for children from those who sneak across the border just to have a kid for free at our expense. Those doing it legally are an American tradition, but free loaders need to pay their own way.
Socialized Health Care:
She is not sure where she stands yet. She does know that Etna, Blue Cross/Shield, Medicare, Medicaid, are all inadequate and a nightmare to work with. Medical bankruptcy is going to explode and really hit the economy. She does think Health Savings plans are good even for low-income people, it gives the customer power on their side and the ability to shop around.
Socialized Treatment Programs:
She will overlook one mistake. If someone really screws up because of substance abuse, but steps up and does the right things, and that stupid behavior never reoccurs, then you should have the help. Again it is cheaper than what damage a drunk can do. Those who just cry and repent for drama should be used for medical research so they have value to society. Again I personally agree with the message but not the method.
Domestic Abuse:
Zero tolerance. Hit me once shame on you, hit me twice shame on me. She will hit back, use a gun, pepper spray, use a base ball bat, pee in your food, call the police, the FBI, the Marines, post the abusers face all over the internet, grocery store bulletins, yard sales signs, and rent a road side bill board. Hit her, hit a kid, life as you know it is over. Good for her! Hates how an abuser can get sent to jail, and while in jail can’t pay child support.
PETA and animal rights:
She loves animals, tho not a vegetarian thinks animals should be treated humanly. We use free range eggs, chicken and beef. (costs more so we use less too) She once toured a Tyson plant and was grossed out by the whole thing. (She said her hair stunk fro a week)She wants more control and protection of marine mammals. She is a member of Sea Shepard’s, those folks who also get baseball bats and make a circle around a baby seal and dare the hunters to “come get some.” Or scare off whales with air horns when they see a whaling ship. Knows global warming is real, wants government to step in on big industry and clean up.
How she copes living with a loony Libertarian?
I have always admired her work ethic, and at one time before we had kids we had seven jobs between the two of us. She does live a life that you get what you deserve and paying a price now will have rewards later. She knows there is no free lunch, and we all eat the lunch we earn literally and figuratively. We often disagree how much the state should be involved she is for a mixed economy I am total laissez-faire. She wants more regulation of industry I say the market will tend to itself. She hates conservative talk radio and says hate radio only hurts the system and process, I say turn it off and it will go away. We both agree that all types of beliefs are good so be it as they harm none, it is the diversity that keeps it interesting.
